Licensure and Mobility in Virginia's Neighboring States

Below is information on practice mobility rules for Virginia's surrounding states and Washington, D.C. We're updating this page as soon as we receive more information.

Mobility rules affect the ability of Virginia's CPAs to practice in other states using their Virginia CPA license. 


North Carolina

Maryland

Tennessee

Washington, D.C.

  • Mobility is based on substantial equivalency according to the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) program. Individual mobility is available if verified by NQAS.

West Virginia 

  • Mobility is based on substantial equivalency according to the NQAS program. Individual mobility is available if verified by NQAS. WV also has universal licensure, which may allow for ease of practice mobility regardless of licensure pathway.

Kentucky

  • Mobility is based on substantial equivalency to Kentucky's licensure requirements. The VSCPA is waiting for response from Kentucky Board of Accountancy on how they will handle licensees from states with new pathway until they make their own changes.
