Pathways to Become a CPA

Ready to begin your CPA journey? Start here!

A new pathway to CPA licensure is now the law in Virginia. Part of a nationwide effort to address challenges to the accounting profession's talent pipeline, broadening requirements to CPA licensure is happening not just in Virginia but nationwide.

What does this mean?

You have more flexibility than EVER in choosing how to begin your career with the ultimate destination to become a CPA. Prior to Jan. 1, 2026, the third pathway was unavailable. Now, all CPA candidates must receive a bachelor’s degree with an accounting concentration or equivalent (as defined by the Virginia Board of Accountancy) and then individually decide how to combine their education and experience. All applicants must still pass the CPA Exam.

You'll always need to meet the 3 E’s: education, exam and experience. But now, the power is in YOUR hands. Choose one of three pathways to licensure in Virginia, each combining education and experience differently.

I want to become a CPA. Which path is right for me?

This is an individual decision, of course. You'll have to weigh multiple factors. For example, if paying for additional college credit hours is difficult, you may decide to go right into work and gain two years of experience before sitting for the Exam and becoming a CPA. If you are easily able to take extra education hours, you could forego the extra experience year, sit for the Exam and get your license a little earlier. It's a personal decision you can make to fit your life and your needs!

Do you have resources to help me decide or learn more?

We sure do! Start with a few of these!
