Meet VSCPA Scholar Marisa Cooke
February 02, 2026
Every VSCPA scholar carries with them a story of ambition, discovery and the drive to succeed.
Meet Marisa Cooke, an undergraduate senior at Virginia Tech and proud VSCPA Foundation scholarship recipient. Her journey into accounting is one of unexpected inspiration, bold decisions, and a growing passion for making a difference through the profession.
An important school trip
When Marisa began her college career at Virginia Tech, she pursued a major in marketing management, still exploring her interests. It wasn’t until she took her first ACIS class that she discovered accounting. While many of her classmates found the coursework challenging, it clicked for her almost immediately — and to her surprise, she genuinely enjoyed it.
During her sophomore year, a defining moment reshaped her future. Marisa joined Collegiate Women in Business and was selected to participate in a trek to Washington, D.C., visiting a variety of companies, including the Big Four accounting firms. “I didn’t expect to be chosen, but that trip completely changed my perspective,” she reflects. Listening to professionals share their career journeys opened her eyes to the incredible opportunities in accounting.
From job security and career growth to the welcoming and supportive people she met, Marisa knew she had found her path. Upon returning to campus, she met with her advisor and made the decision to switch her major to accounting. Looking back, she says: “That trip was such a defining moment for me, and I honestly cannot imagine what career path I would be pursuing if I had not gone.”
The doors are wide open
Marisa will graduate from Virginia Tech in May 2026, and she has her sights firmly set on becoming a CPA. For her, the CPA license represents more than just a career milestone — it’s a way to create impact and open doors.
“I am interested in becoming a CPA because it’s a valuable and respected career path that will open up incredible opportunities for me. There will always be a need for accountants, and I love the idea of having a skill that is both in demand and highly impactful,” Marisa shares.
She sees accounting as the perfect fit for her strengths in numbers, organization and attention to detail. More importantly, she sees it as a way to serve others: helping companies make smarter financial decisions, promoting financial literacy in her community, and contributing to the success of both individuals and businesses.
The power of your support

Her story is a powerful reminder of why scholarships matter — they change lives, inspire confidence, and create pathways for talented students to thrive.
