Virginia Department of Taxation's Online Services are Changing
July 24, 2026
Get ready! The Virginia Department of Taxation (Virginia Tax) is beginning to roll out changes to its online services platform as part of a larger modernization effort.
When it's done with the transition, taxpayers will be able to file, pay and manage taxes in one place. This will be a four-year implementation process, with different taxes moving to the new, modernized Online Services platform each year. Virginia Tax will maintain multiple systems for a few years but plans to minimize disruptions during the transition.
The VSCPA has communicated with Virginia Tax on the changes and several VSCPA members helped the state government with usability testing. Here's what you can expect.
Businesses Will See Changes First
Businesses will begin the transition to the new Online Services platform in September. Starting Nov. 9, 2026, businesses will no longer be able to file and pay certain taxes, like sales & use and withholding taxes, in Virginia Tax's existing online services platform (iFile). Review the timeline on Virginia Tax's website to learn more about which businesses will be impacted and when. Virginia Tax encourages affected businesses to start using the new Online Services platform in September to get used to the new system.
What Tax Pros Need to Know
Tax professionals with existing tax preparer online accounts (in iFile) will be able to transition their accounts to the new system using their current credentials.
What's Coming Later
Once Virginia Tax moves sales and withholding taxes to the new platform, other taxes will move over, including corporate income tax, pass-through entity income tax, individual tax and others.
