Using CPA in your firm title? Make sure you’re licensed!

November 22, 2024

As of July 1, 2024, firms using “CPA” in their names must be licensed as CPA firms in Virginia or have firm licenses from another state. Previously, use of CPA in a firm name depended on ownership percentage; at least 51% of the firm had to have been vested in CPA licensees for the firm to use “CPA.” (See this part of the Code of Virginia for more.) Using “Certified Public Accountant” or “public accountant” in a firm name also constitutes using the CPA title and requires licensure.

Additionally, firms still need to obtain a license if they perform attest, compilation or financial statement preparation services.

Be advised: A firm that does not provide the above services or have CPA in its title BUT uses CPA in its website URL must now procure a firm license.

Firms can apply for a license online, which require a non-refundable application fee of $100.
