From the CEO: Connect and engage, the VSCPA way

November 21, 2024

By Stephanie Peters, CAE

Following the pandemic, VSCPA leaders and staff started to hear more and more that you want to feel connected and foster relationships. It became clear — the time for isolation is over, and CPAs want to network, advance their skills, and build camaraderie.

The theme of connection was obvious throughout our process to develop our strategic priorities, VSCPA 2030. As we move through the first year of implementing the plan, we’re launching new programs and opportunities driven by your feedback and ideas, designed for CPAs and accounting professionals at all levels of their careers.

Not your typical networking: Our Young Professionals Advisory Council is leading the charge with fun, active networking events like speed networking, boxing and pickleball. This winter, we’re hosting an accounting careers panel, headshots session and trivia night. All members are welcome — join us! Emerging leaders can also take advantage of networking at CPA Leadership Essentials.

Peer learning group and roundtables: This year we’ve launched a Corporate Accounting Peer Networking group — a free, member-led program for participants to exchange ideas, advice and knowledge in small groups. With more than 100 participants so far, the feedback on this recurring program has been excellent. See future events here. We also have roundtables for large and medium-sized CPA firm partners (to be invited, email VSCPA Membership Development Director Julia Henderson.)

Help us lead the way: Volunteering is the best way to create connections with other professionals, deepen your engagement with the profession, and gain valuable career skills. Joining a board or a committee allows you to build lasting relationships — just ask our 40-year members who have forged decades-long friendships and collaborations. Volunteering for 2025–2026 year is now recruiting; learn more here.

Partnering with other organizations: We’re exploring initiatives to partner with other professional associations so you can expand your connection base. Earlier this fall, we collaborated on a joint networking event at a Leesburg winery with the Greater Washington Society of CPAs. We also have an ongoing relationship with the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) Richmond and held a joint event last summer. Stay tuned for more collaborations! You can find all our networking events online
