5 accountant vacation traps — And how to avoid them

June 22, 2023

When Brannon Poe, CPA, went on vacation with his laptop, it almost got thrown into the ocean.

His wife was upset that his excuse of “this will take 30 minutes” became three hours of work. At the end of their trip, she said “If you ever take a laptop on another vacation again, I’m going to throw it in the water.” Now, Brannon rarely takes his personal cell phone on vacation. But how did he get comfortable doing that? How can you?

Start with the art of letting go, Brannon says, in his ebook, “The Unplugged Vacation: How Accounting Firm Owners Can Take a Proper Holiday Without Checking Emails.” The first step is to use the Poe Group Advisors’ free Three-Bucket Tool to understand yourself better. What do you most enjoy at your firm? What can your team start doing today to give themselves more time? After entering your name and email, you’ll receive a two-page PDF with an example task organizer and a blank one for yourself to fill out.

The next step: Examine your mindset and understand the five traps that could come up while planning your tech-free vacation:

  1. “Time is money.”
  2. Technology addiction.
  3. Client expectations.
  4. Problems delegating.
  5. Multitasking.

According to Brannon, about four weeks prior to your trip, you need to tell your key clients and staff. Then, another reminder needs to be sent a week before you depart for your trip. There are example emails for these steps within the e-book.

To learn about more ideas that are discussed within the e-book, visit this page and enter your name and email to receive four videos created by the Poe Group Advisors that discuss using your time and energy efficiently, delegating and setting boundaries with your time.
