Ethics Course Description

Virginia-Specific Ethics Course 2019

This training has been created to help you meet the Virginia Board of Accountancy's (VBOA) annual 2-hour (100-minute) CPE requirement for 2019. In 2003, the Virginia General Assembly passed a law requiring all CPAs subject to Virginia CPE requirements to take an annual Ethics CPE course.


  • Satisfies the 2019 VBOA Ethics CPE requirement and fulfills some requirements for the following jurisdictions:
    • Maryland: Satisfies 2 hours
    • North Carolina: Group study and on-demand versions satisfy 2 hours for CPAs licensed in Virginia and North Carolina who primarily work in Virginia 
    • Washington, D.C.: Satisfies 2 hours
    • West Virginia: Satisfies 2 hours
  • Relevant to Virginia CPAs working in public practice, industry, government, nonprofits and academia
  • Uses case-based instruction to consider relevant ethical dilemmas
  • Includes course materials which serve as reference resources

Learning Objectives

Developed using the VBOA's outline as the course framework, attendees will be able to accomplish the following fundamental objectives: 

  • Identify the AICPA and PLUS models for ethical decision-making 
  • Clarify ways to provide acceptable service to the public beyond their vocation while complying with rules and regulations
  • Recognize rules and regulations that guide the profession in the state of Virginia 
  • Isolate critical steps for charting an ethical course that is acceptable to the profession

The Virginia Society of CPAs (VSCPA) is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) as a sponsor of continuing professional education on the National Registry of CPE Sponsors. State boards of accountancy have final authority on the acceptance of individual courses for CPE credit.
