CPA Day of Service and #CPAsGiveBack
CPA Day of Service was an annual event held by the VSCPA each September as the culmination of Virginia CPA Week. This year, the VSCPA is eliminating CPA Day of Service as a standalone event and relaxing its requirements for the program. Our members and firms are very active in communities with service projects, and we want to acknowledge and celebrate that service throughout the year without limiting it to one day.
With that in mind, we’re asking members and firms to share photos, videos and recaps of activities with us on an ongoing basis. Submissions will be included in our #CPAsGiveBack campaign where we share members’ service projects on social media and in Disclosures magazine.
Here are the ways you can make sure we publicize your event:
- Email pictures and videos to VSCPA Communications Manager Chip Knighton and Student & Member Engagement Specialist Lauren Simonetti
- Post pictures, videos and information on the VSCPA Facebook page using the #CPAsGiveBack hashtag
- Tag the VSCPA in photos and videos on Twitter (@VSCPANews) and Instagram (@VSCPA) using the #CPAsGiveBack hashtag
We’ll share any submissions we receive to help showcase the ways VSCPA members give back to the communities where they live and work. Thanks to our members for being such great representatives of the profession!
We're still committed to publicizing our members' efforts in the community! Your volunteer service projects are vital to the image of the CPA profession in the communities where our members live and work.
The VSCPA launched a new financial literacy initiative in 2004 to improve the financial health of Virginians. Called Financial Fitness, this campaign reaches out to the community and educates the public on topics related to money management and fiscal responsibility. Financial Fitness Day is held annually during Financial Literacy Month (the month of April) at sites statewide. Volunteer CPAs man informational booths to offer free financial advice, resources and materials to local communities. More Financial Fitness programs include:
- "Ask a CPA" Email Program
Through the "Ask a CPA" Email Program, Virginians can get their state and federal tax questions as well as personal finance questions answered year round. VSCPA members provide free advice by answering email questions forwarded to them. Questions are answered within three business days.
- Speaking & Community Engagement
Are you a dynamic speaker? If you would enjoy speaking to schools, local community groups, media, nonprofits and other organizations about topics in your areas of expertise, the VSCPA's Speaking & Community Engagement program is for you! As part of the Financial Fitness campaign, we aim to connect CPAs with opportunities to reach out to the community and educate individuals and organizations on financial topics.
The VSCPA organizes year-round and tax season public service events/programs to give members an outlet for becoming involved in the community and to promote the image of the CPA profession. These events and programs include:
- Ask a CPA Email Program
The Financial Fitness initiative includes a Taxpayer Resource Center, developed as the premier source for tax and financial planning information. Through the Ask a CPA Email Program, Virginians can get their state and federal tax questions as well as personal finance questions answered year round. VSCPA members provide free advice by answering email questions forwarded to them. Questions are answered within three business days.
- NBC12 Tax Call-In Show
One of the first on-air programs staffed exclusively by VSCPA members is the NBC12 Tax Call-In Show in Richmond. CPA volunteers answer phone calls from viewers and give free advice during the NBC12 evening news broadcast. This program runs from January through April each year.
- Virginia Public Radio Tax Call-In
In February each year, a live tax interview is broadcast over the airwaves of Virginia Public Radio across the Commonwealth. VSCPA members field calls from Virginia Public Radio listeners and provide answers to the tax questions on the air.
Through the Find a CPA program, the VSCPA matches individuals and businesses that need professional financial services with CPA firms in their geographic region. Located on the Connect website, the referral service allows the public to easily search for a CPA or firm for free by name, location, services offered, industries served and size of the firm.
