The Honorable Robert W. Goodlatte
House Committee on the Judiciary
2138 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20515
Dear Chairman Goodlatte:
On behalf of the more than 11,000 members of the Virginia Society of CPAs (VSCPA), I would like to congratulate you on your re-election to Congress as well as your continued service as chairman of the House Committee on the Judiciary.
We realize that there are many pressing issues already pending before your committee, but we would like to reaffirm our strong support for the Mobile Workforce State Income Tax Simplification Act (formerly H.R. 1129). It is our understanding that Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) and a Republican colleague will reintroduce the same bill very soon. In the 113th Congress, H.R. 1129 enjoyed bipartisan support with 36 cosponsors. The Senate companion bill (S. 1645) also enjoyed bipartisan support with 16 cosponsors, many of whom were members of the Finance Committee. Furthermore, we understand that Senators John Thune (R-S.D.) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) will reintroduce their bill soon as well.
We very much appreciated your public support for H.R. 1129 in the last Congress, and we were pleased to learn about your positive comments regarding that legislation in recent press reports. Like you, we believe this legislation is needed to protect employers and their employees who travel for work. We believe the Mobile Workforce legislation is one of the few state tax items that, as a stand-alone bill, could be passed expeditiously by the full Committee and by the House with broad, bipartisan support, as was done during the 112th Congress.
Thank you for your service to Virginia and to our nation. If you have questions, or if we can be of any further assistance, please contact me or VSCPA Government Affairs Director Emily Walker at [email protected] or (804) 612-9428.
