The VSCPA held the 8th Leaders’ Institute for Virginia’s brightest accounting students June 13–14 at The Mason Inn at George Mason University in Fairfax.
The VSCPA established the Leaders’ Institute in 2007 following a gift from accounting and consulting firm Baker Tilly Virchow Krause. Specifically designed for the top college accounting students in the Commonwealth, the Leaders’ Institute provides a hands-on workshop program for young aspiring CPAs. The Institute is the only development program of its kind in Virginia and provides rising college juniors and seniors the opportunity for vital leadership training and real-life skills to successfully transition into the competitive marketplace.
Seventy-nine accounting students from 25 Virginia colleges and universities who have displayed exceptional academic achievement and a keen interest in business and professional services attended the event, which focused on career-building skills and tools of the accounting trade, offering insightful perspectives from seasoned professionals.
“The students were energetic, asked great questions, and the VSCPA gave them powerful information which they soaked up during the weekend. It was a pleasure being a part of the program, providing guidance, and seeing the VSCPA at its best, preparing students to be great professionals and future CPAs,” Colette Wilson, CPA, chair of the VSCPA Board of Directors, said.
In addition to Baker Tilly, the VSCPA would like to thank the following sponsors of the Leaders’ Institute for their support of accounting and business education: Aronson, BDO, Becker, Burdette Smith & Bish, Capital Group Companies, Cherry Bekaert, Cotton & Company, Deloitte, Dixon Hughes Goodman, Ernst & Young and the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO).
