New Chair of Virginia Society of CPAs Promotes Financial Literacy and High Standards in the CPA Profession

The Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA) has selected James Shepherd, CPA, as chair of its Board of Directors for the 2013–2014 fiscal year. Shepherd is the Chairman of Verus Financial Partners, a financial planning firm in Richmond.

During his term as chair, Shepherd will work to support the VSCPA’s strategic plan and maintain a focus on supporting the organization’s mission to enhance the success of CPAs. Shepherd has his eye on financial literacy and providing that education to the public, believing that CPAs can make a big difference in this area. He also hopes to continue to focus on integrity and transparency in order to continue to enhance the profession and Society.

“When I was working with people in the business community, I quickly learned that there were certain people that I really admired the most as far as integrity and the things that they were trying to do in business,” Shepherd said. “And those were Certified Public Accountants. One of the things I always strive to do is to try to set standards in this profession for financial planning and really try to make sure that financial planning is being held at that high standard. The Virginia Society has been doing this all along.”

At the VSCPA’s annual leadership conference, Shepherd outlined the VSCPA’s focus on four key areas for the third year of a three year strategy. These strategies include achieving the organization’s legislative and regulatory agenda by strengthening its influence, engaging more members and developing strategic relationships; developing an integrated approach to becoming the premier broker of relevant knowledge to Virginia CPAs; creating a more dynamic community by better engaging members; and developing and implementing a comprehensive and overarching technology plan.

Shepherd received his bachelor’s degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and his post baccalaureate certificate in accounting at Virginia Commonwealth University. Shepherd is a member of the Financial Planning Association, Past President of the Richmond Society of the Institute of Certified Financial Planners and the recipient of the Roy Johnson Founders’ Award from the Central Virginia Society. He is Past President of the Richmond Chapter of the International Association for Financial Planning. His peers have selected him as an “Outstanding CPA” in financial planning, as reported in the Virginia Business Magazine. He was named the 2008 recipient of the John H. Cecil, Jr. Lifetime Service Award by the Financial Planning Association of Central Virginia.

Shepherd joined the VSCPA in 1997 and began his first term on the Board of Directors in 2009. He is the past president of the Richmond Chapter of the VCSPA. He spent his year as chair-elect watching and learning from his predecessor, John Montoro, CPA.
