Virginia Secretary of Health and Human Resources Announces Virginia Health Reform Initiative
Virginia Secretary of Health and Human Resources Dr. Bill Hazel announced last week the establishment of a statewide health reform initiative to prepare Virginia for the implementation of federal health reform by planning for the expansion of Medicaid eligibility. It is estimated that this expansion will increase the number of Medicaid enrollees in Virginia from 270,000 to 425,000, at a cost of $1.5 billion dollars between 2017 and 2022. Spotlight on Virginia: International Visitation to the Commonwealth Jumps 16 Percent
Virginia bucked a national trend and posted a 16 percent increase in visits from overseas travelers in 2009, despite the recession and an overall decrease in international visitors nationally. Data from a recent U.S. Department of Commerce report showed that Virginia posted the greatest percentage increase for international visitors amongst the states and territories surveyed. IRS Offers Details on New Small Business Health Care Tax Credit
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has issued new guidance to make it easier for small businesses to determine whether they are eligible for the new health care tax credit under the Affordable Care Act and how large a credit they will receive. The guidance, Notice 2010-44, makes clear that small businesses receiving state health care tax credits may still qualify for the full federal tax credit. Additionally, the guidance allows small businesses to receive the credit not only for regular health insurance but also for add-on dental and vision coverage.
Class of 2010: Business- and Tech-Related Majors Most Likely to Have Job in Hand
New graduates with degrees in business- or technical-related fields are most likely to have a job to go to following graduation, according to a new study from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). NACE’s 2010 Student Survey shows that accounting, business administration, computer science, engineering, and mathematics majors were more likely to get — and accept — job offers than other types of grads. VSCPA Wins Award for Centennial Celebration Campaign
On Thursday May 6, the VSCPA won a “Commonwealth Award of Excellence,” in the extended events and observances category of the 2010 Virginia Public Relations Awards for its Centennial Celebration campaign. CPA Inauguration Honors 64 Newly Licensed Virginia CPAs
The VSCPA held the sixth inauguration for Virginia’s newly licensed CPAs on Thursday, April 29, at The Jefferson Hotel in Richmond. Approximately 197 people attended the special event, sponsored by Cherry, Bekaert & Holland and Goodman & Company, including more than 64 CPAs who were issued licenses in the Commonwealth from June 2009 through January 2010.
