More Than 500 CPAs Volunteer Around Virginia for First-Ever CPA Day of Service

September 18, 2009

The VSCPA hosted the first-ever CPA Day of Service on Friday, September 18, 2009, as part of “Virginia CPA Week.” In honor of the VSCPA’s Centennial anniversary, CPA firms and individual CPAs across Virginia united together on this day for volunteer activities of their choice. It was a single day of volunteer service that represented the CPA profession's ongoing commitment to serving the communities where its professionals live and work, through old-fashioned volunteerism.

More than 500 volunteers across the state worked at 55 volunteer locations encompassing a variety of organizations and including both indoor and outdoor projects. Some organizations where CPA volunteered included Habitat for Humanity in Fredericksburg, Salvation Army in Harrisonburg, Habitat for Humanity in Arlington, Special Olympics, YMCA in Danville, Hospice of the Piedmont & Ivy Creek Foundation in Charlottesville, Union Mission Staff in Virginia Beach and Central Virginia Food Bank in Richmond.

“Virginia CPAs are excited to celebrate the VSCPA's milestone anniversary and the CPA profession’s long legacy of volunteerism and community outreach in the Commonwealth,” said Jamie Walker, CPA, chair of the VSCPA Board of Directors. “We are very excited to participate in the CPA Day of Service to assist and volunteer for worthwhile Virginia organizations.”

To spotlight the value CPAs offer the Commonwealth’s citizens and commerce, Gov. Timothy Kaine signed a proclamation (.PDF) recognizing September 13–19, 2009, as ”Virginia Certified Public Accountants Week.” The proclamation was introduced by the VSCPA as part of its Centennial anniversary in 2009.

The VSCPA hopes the commemorative week, along with the CPA Day of Service, will build awareness of the significant growth and importance of the CPA profession and the VSCPA, which now serves more than 8,700 members. CPAs are trusted advisors to businesses, organizations and individuals, helping them make sound financial decisions, and this week highlights the CPA profession’s important contributions to Virginia citizens and communities.
