Money Management Usage Guidelines

Each month, the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA) distributes Money Management columns and public service announcements to print and broadcast media in Virginia on personal financial planning issues for individuals and small businesses. All Money Management columns are archived on the VSCPA website in the Press Room section.

Guidelines for Virginia Media

All reprinted articles by Virginia media must credit the VSCPA as the source for the information. This can be done in the following formats:

1. Byline at the beginning of the column, using the following formula:

  • Title of column – "Simple Tax Trip-Ups You Can Avoid"
  • Byline – "A column on personal finance prepared by the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants"
  • Body of article

2. Byline at the end of the column, using the following formula:

  • Title of column – "Simple Tax Trip-Ups You Can Avoid"
  • Body of article
  • Byline – "A column on personal finance prepared by the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants"

3. In the first paragraph of the column, using the following formula:

  • Title of column – "Simple Tax Trip-Ups You Can Avoid"
  • First paragraph of article – "Each year, in their haste to meet the filing deadline, millions of taxpayers make mistakes that can affect their tax bills, delay the processing of their returns, and/or attract the attention of the IRS. The following checklist of tax trip-ups, provided by the Virginia Society of CPAs, can help you avoid these all too common errors."

Guidelines for VSCPA Members

VSCPA members may use modified versions of the Money Management articles in local newspapers or magazines. Below are the reprint guidelines for members:

  • If a VSCPA member wishes to use Money Management articles, they must first contact the VSCPA Communications Team. This allows the VSCPA to track which member(s) and publication(s) are using the articles.
  • The original article cannot be reprinted  "as is." To receive credit in a byline, the VSCPA member must use their own words, and/or ideas in at least 25 percent of the article.
  • VSCPA must be given credit as a source of information for any Money Management article(s) modified by a member. This can be in the first paragraph of an article or as a byline. Failure to include such an attribution is a copyright violation and may cause the member to lose their privileges to use Money Management articles.
  • If the VSCPA member receives a byline credit, the article cannot mention their firm or company name, telephone number, e-mail or Web site address.

VSCPA members may also reprint or use modified Money Management articles in their firm/company publication(s) for employees, customers or clients. Reprint guidelines follow:

  • If Money Management articles are included as part of a firm or company's publication(s), the VSCPA Communications Team must be notified. Additionally, the firm or company is requested to provide the VSCPA with a copy of each issue that a Money Management article appears. This allows the VSCPA to track how and when an article is used.
  • Money Management articles may be reprinted "as is" in a VSCPA member's firm/company publication. The VSCPA must be given full credit as the source of the story in the first paragraph or in the byline.
  • If a VSCPA member wishes to have his/her name in a byline, he/she must use their own words, and/or ideas in at least 25 percent of the article. The VSCPA must also be listed as a source of information in the first paragraph or in the byline. Failure to include such an attribution is a copyright violation and may cause the member to lose their privileges to use Money Management articles.
