VSCPA Wins 2007 Best in Virginia Awards for Financial Literacy Initiative and Magazine

The Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA) was honored for its Financial Fitness community service initiative and Disclosures magazine in the 2007 Best in Virginia Awards, sponsored by the Richmond Chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC). Awards were announced at a special dinner, held Thursday, December 7.

The VSCPA received Honorable Mention in the community relations category for its financial literacy initiative called Financial Fitness — Improving the Financial Health of Virginians. The campaign is part of a national effort of the CPA profession to educate all Virginians — from school children to retirees — on money management and fiscal responsibility topics. Through Financial Fitness, Virginia CPAs provide pro bono outreach to the public through year-round financial workshops, speakers bureau, community service events, free wall calendar and other special publications. The VSCPA also serves as the catalyst for the Governor’s Proclamation naming April as Virginia Financial Literacy Month and manages a consumer Web site, www.FinancialFitness.org, to serve as a clearinghouse of financial resources.

Disclosures — the VSCPA’s bimonthly, four-color magazine for Virginia CPAs — also received Honorable Mention in the magazine category. The only winner in its category, Disclosures contains breaking news in the accounting industry, professional and technical articles, information on VSCPA continuing education opportunities and programs, member news, classified ads and more. The magazine reaches more than 8,300 CPAs and accounting professionals in public accounting, private business, government, industry and education.

There are two Best in Virginia award divisions: Communication Management and Communication Skills. Management categories represent entire communications campaigns, while skills categories represent specific components of a campaign, such as writing, editing and design.

“The VSCPA is honored to receive this wonderful recognition from IABC/Richmond for our Financial Fitness campaign and Disclosures magazine,” said VSCPA President & CEO Stephanie R. Peters, CAE. “It not only validates the hard work and dedication of the VSCPA staff, but shows our continued efforts to lead the CPA profession by providing high quality information and services to our membership and the public at large.”
