Virginia Society of CPAs Offers Free Financial Advice to Virginia Tech Community

According to the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA), the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has just granted a six-month filing and payment extension to the Virginia Tech victims, their families, emergency responders, students and employees.

These taxpayers now have until October 15, 2007, to file and make payments associated with their 2006 individual tax returns previously due April 17. No filing and payment penalties will be due for those who qualify for this extension as long as the returns are filed and payments are made by October 15.

To claim this relief, taxpayers should call the IRS at (866) 562-5227 and identify themselves to the IRS before they file and/or make payment. If you have questions regarding the IRS extension, please visit the "Newsroom" section of the IRS Web site at www.irs.gov.

"The VSCPA offers our sincere condolences and sympathy to the Virginia Tech community and the families and friends of victims affected by the April 16 tragic shooting," said Thomas M. Berry Jr., CAE, president & CEO. "Our thoughts are with the students, faculty, staff, administration, alumni, families and all those affected by this senseless event."

The Virginia Society of CPAs is offering free financial advice to the families affected by the Virginia Tech tragedy. Through the VSCPA's community service program, Virginia Disaster Recovery Help, Virginia CPAs will help affected individuals understand the tax filing extension as well as other financial consequences. Virginia residents that sign up for the program will be matched with an experienced, licensed CPA volunteer in their area.
