Scholarships
2013–2014 VSCPA Educational Foundation Scholarships
Scholarships for the 2013–2014 academic year range from $1,000 to $4,000. The April 1, 2013 deadline has passed and applications are no longer being accepted at this time. For more information contact VSCPA Academic & Career Development Coordinator Tracey Zink at tzink@vscpa.com or (804) 612-9427.
All applicants must be:
- A U.S. citizen
- Currently enrolled in an accredited Virginia college or university with the intent to pursue a degree in accounting
Below is a listing of all scholarships. For eligibility requirements, click on each scholarship.
VSCPA Undergraduate Accounting Scholarship | Top
On average, four scholarships of up to $1,000 each are awarded to undergraduate students who demonstrate academic excellence and financial need.
Eligibility:
- Must demonstrate a minimum overall and accounting GPA of 3.0
- Must have completed at least three hours of accounting and be currently registered for at least three more accounting credit hours.
VSCPA Minority Accounting Scholarship | Top
On average, four scholarships of up to $1,000 each are awarded to minority students who demonstrate academic excellence and financial need.
Eligibility:
- Must demonstrate a minimum overall and accounting GPA of 3.0.
- Must be a member of one of the following race/ethnic groups: American Indian or Alaskan Native, Asian, Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander.
- Must have completed at least three hours of accounting and be currently registered for at least three more accounting credit hours.
VSCPA Graduate Accounting Scholarship | Top
On average, four scholarships of up to $1,000 each are awarded to graduate students who demonstrate academic excellence and financial need.
Eligibility:
- Must demonstrate a minimum overall and accounting undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher.
VSCPA Ph.D. Accounting Scholarship | Top
This $5,000 scholarship is awarded to a student who is pursuing a Ph.D. in accounting and who demonstrates academic excellence and financial need.
Eligibility:
- Must demonstrate a minimum overall and accounting GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Must be a full-time doctoral student.
VSCPA Past Presidents/Chair Scholarship | Top
This $1,000 scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student who demonstrates academic excellence and financial need. This award honors past presidents/chairs of the Virginia Society of CPAs (VSCPA) and VSCPA Educational Foundation.
Eligibility
- Must demonstrate a minimum overall and accounting GPA of 3.0
- Must have completed at least three hours of accounting and be currently registered for at least three more accounting credit hours.
- Preference given to a student who demonstrates leadership potential — please describe in essay.
CST Group Scholarship | Top
This $1,500 scholarship is funded by a generous contribution from the CST Group.
Eligibility:
- Must be a rising junior or senior accounting major currently enrolled at the University of Virginia or George Mason University with the intent to take the CPA Exam.
- Must demonstrate a minimum overall and accounting GPA of 3.0.
Dixon Hughes Goodman Scholarship | Top
This $3,250 scholarship is funded by a generous contribution from Dixon Hughes Goodman.
Eligibility:
- Must be a rising junior or senior accounting major with the intent to take the CPA Exam.
- Must demonstrate a minimum overall and accounting GPA of 3.0.
H. Burton Bates Jr. Scholarship | Top
This $1,750 scholarship is funded by a generous contribution from the children of H. Burton Bates Jr., CPA, a VSCPA life member who passed away in May 2005.
Eligibility:
- Must be a full-time rising junior or senior accounting major currently OR have earned an undergraduate degree from an accredited Virginia college or university and enrolled at least part-time taking additional coursework in order to take the CPA Exam.
- Must demonstrate a minimum overall and accounting GPA of 3.0.
Kearney & Company Scholarship | Top
Two $2,500 scholarships funded by a generous contribution from Kearney & Company.
Eligibility #1:
- Must be a rising junior accounting major at George Mason University, Old Dominion University, James Madison University, Virginia Tech or The College of William & Mary.
- Must be enrolled full-time during the term of application and throughout the term of scholarship in coursework required to qualify to take the CPA Exam OR enrolled part-time and employed a minimum of five hours a week.
- Must demonstrate a minimum overall and accounting GPA of 2.5.
- Must demonstrate involvement in extracurricular activities.
Eligibility #2:
- Must be a rising senior accounting major at George Mason University, Old Dominion University, James Madison University, Virginia Tech or The College of William & Mary.
- Must be enrolled full-time during the term of application and throughout the term of scholarship in coursework required to qualify to take the CPA Exam OR enrolled part-time and employed a minimum of five hours a week.
- Must demonstrate a minimum overall and accounting GPA of 2.5.
- Must demonstrate involvement in extracurricular activities.
Michael E. Mares Scholarship | Top
This $2,000 scholarship is funded by generous contributions from Witt Mares, PLC and friends, family and colleagues of Michael E. Mares, CPA, a VSCPA member known for his tax law expertise and impact on the profession, who passed away in 2009.
Eligibility:
- Must be a rising junior or senior accounting major with the intent to take the CPA Exam.
- Must be enrolled full-time during the term of application and throughout the term of scholarship in coursework required to qualify to take the CPA Exam.
- Must demonstrate a minimum overall and accounting GPA of 3.0
- Must demonstrate involvement in extracurricular activities.
Murray, Jonson, White and Associates Scholarship | Top
This $3,000 scholarship is funded by a generous contribution from Murray, Jonson, White and Associates and its clients and friends.
Eligibility:
- Must be a rising junior or senior accounting major with the intent to take the CPA Exam
- Must demonstrate a minimum overall and accounting GPA of 3.0.
- First preference: student whose permanent residence is in Northern Virginia. Second preference: student whose permanent residence is in Virginia.
Thomas M. Berry Jr. Scholarship | Top
This $4,000 scholarship is funded by generous contributions from friends, family and colleagues of Thomas M. Berry Jr., president & CEO of the VSCPA, who retired as in April 2007.
Eligibility:
- Must demonstrate a minimum overall and accounting GPA of 3.0. with the intent of taking the CPA Exam
- Applicant must have completed at least three hours of accounting and be currently registered for at least three more accounting credit hours.
Verus Financial Partners Scholarship | Top
This $1,750 scholarship is generously funded by
Verus Financial Partners.
Eligibility:
- Must be a rising junior or senior accounting major with the intent to take the CPA Exam.
- Must demonstrate a minimum overall and accounting GPA of 3.0.
Virginia Tech Doctoral Scholarship | Top
This $2,000 doctoral scholarship honors and remembers the lives of Austin M. Cloyd, Matthew G. Gwaltney & Maxine S. Turner, students of Virginia accounting families who were lost in the tragic events at Virginia Tech on April 16, 2007. Generous donations from VSCPA members and accounting firms in Virginia have made it possible for the Foundation to provide this financial support to students pursuing a doctoral degree in accounting at Virginia Tech.
Eligibility

Wall, Einhorn & Chernitzer Scholarship | Top
This $2,500 is funded by a generous contribution from Wall, Einhorn & Chernitzer.
Eligibility:
- Must be a junior or senior accounting major currently enrolled at Old Dominion University, the University of Virginia, William & Mary, Virginia Tech or James Madison University with the intent to take the CPA Exam.
- Must demonstrate a minimum overall and accounting GPA of 3.0.
Yount, Hyde & Barbour Scholarship | Top
This $1,500 scholarship is funded by a generous contribution from Yount, Hyde & Barbour.
Eligibility:
- Must be a rising junior or senior accounting major with the intent to take the CPA Exam.
- Applicant must demonstrate a minimum overall and accounting GPA of 3.0.
