VSCPA Foundation Offers Accounting Scholarships to Virginia College Students

November 20, 2009

The VSCPA Educational Foundation, one of the largest providers of accounting scholarships and awards in the Commonwealth, is pleased to announce one new undergraduate scholarship in addition to its regular offerings. The Foundation is now accepting scholarship applications from Virginia college and university students for the 2010–2011 academic year. The application deadline is January 11, 2010.

The VSCPA Educational Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting business and accounting education, rewarding academic excellence and encouraging students to pursue promising careers. Rewarding scholarships is just one way the Foundation supports students, educators, the CPA profession and, ultimately, economic growth in Virginia.

This year, the Foundation awarded more than $27,000 in undergraduateminority and graduate scholarships. To qualify for an undergraduate scholarship, applicants must have completed a minimum of three hours of accounting coursework, be enrolled in three additional accounting credit hours and have an accounting GPA of 3.0. Graduate scholarship applicants must be currently enrolled or have been accepted in a graduate accounting program at an accredited Virginia college or university. Other selection criteria for the awards include overall academic performance, entry essay, faculty recommendation(s), and community and/or extracurricular activities.

Nick Stoltzfus, a 2009 scholarship recipient, said, “Thank you for your generous award of the VSCPA undergraduate scholarship. This scholarship will allow me to focus a very large portion of my resources away from paying tuition and towards activities that I believe will result in my personal growth and community benefit.” Stoltzfus is a student at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

The VSCPA Doctoral Accounting Scholarship is a $2,500 scholarship awarded annually to a graduate student who is enrolled in an accredited Virginia college or university, pursuing a Ph.D. in accounting, and who demonstrates academic excellence and financial need. Also, the Austin M. Cloyd, Matthew G. Gwaltney & Maxine S. Turner Doctoral Scholarship was developed by the VSCPA Educational Foundation to honor and remember the lives of students of Virginia accounting families who were lost in the tragic events at Virginia Tech in 2007.

The Wall, Einhorn & Chernitzer Annual Scholarship, new this year, will be awarded to a junior or senior accounting major at Old Dominion University, the University of Virginia, The College of William & Mary, Virginia Tech or James Madison University who plans to pursue a career in public accounting and demonstrates both academic excellence and financial need. This $2,500 scholarship is funded by a generous contribution from Virginia accounting firm Wall, Einhorn & Chernitzer.

The Foundation offers five additional named scholarships: the Cocke, Szpanka & Taylor Annual Scholarship, Goodman & Company Annual Scholarship, H. Burton Bates Jr. Annual ScholarshipThomas M. Berry Jr. Annual Scholarship and Yount, Hyde & Barbour Annual Scholarship. Applicants must be enrolled at a Virginia college or university, pursuing a career in accounting and demonstrate academic excellence.
