CPA Inauguration Honors 64 Newly Licensed Virginia CPAs

The Virginia Society of CPAs (VSCPA) held the sixth inauguration for Virginia’s newly licensed CPAs on Thursday, April 29, at The Jefferson Hotel in Richmond.

Approximately 197 people attended the special event, sponsored by Cherry, Bekaert & Holland and Goodman & Company, including more than 64 CPAs who were issued licenses in the Commonwealth from June 2009 through January 2010. The biannual program, held in the fall and spring each year, is designed to congratulate new CPAs on their recent accomplishment, welcome them into the profession and provide them with a network of peers to assist in their continued growth and development. The VSCPA hosts this hallmark event to commend the new licensees’ dedication to their chosen career and completion of the demanding process of becoming a CPA. The next CPA Inauguration will be held September 24, in Pentagon City.

To become licensed in Virginia, all CPAs must pass a national exam and undergo rigorous higher education and certification requirements, including completing 150 hours of academic courses. To maintain the certification, most CPAs must complete 120 hours of continuing professional education every three years, including Virginia’s two-hour annual course in professional ethics.

“The VSCPA is excited about the success of this event and the positive feedback from new licensees, CPA firms and VSCPA members,” said James K. Walker, CPA, chair of the VSCPA Board of Directors. “We are confident these new licensees will truly enjoy their chosen profession.”

“Years ago, each of you chose to pursue a career in a most distinguished profession — one that is renowned for unyielding ethics and a commitment to serving the public,” said Stephanie R. Peters, VSCPA president and CEO, to the new CPAs at Thursday’s event. “You worked hard to earn your degrees, pass the CPA Exam and gain solid footing in your new profession. Tonight, we celebrate your accomplishments.”

The VSCPA would like to thank and recognize both Cherry, Bekaert & Holland and Goodman & Company for sponsoring the cocktail reception during the CPA Inauguration and supporting accounting and business education.

The Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA) is the leading professional association dedicated to enhancing the success of CPAs. Founded in 1909, the VSCPA has 9,000 members who work in public accounting, industry, government and education.
