Virginia to Participate in IRS State Income Tax Levy Program
The Virginia Department of Taxation (TAX) announced Virginia will now participate with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in the State Income Tax Levy Program (SITLP). SITLP is an automated levy program administered by the IRS that uses state income tax refunds as the levy source for outstanding federal tax liabilities. All other state agency and locality set-off debts must be satisfied before the IRS levies.
TAX will send a notification to the impacted taxpayers explaining that their Virginia state income tax refund was taken for the IRS levy.
TAX does not have any additional information regarding the federal tax liabilities. The notification will also provide IRS with contact information, telephone number and address. If a taxpayer has a question, TAX says the taxpayer should use the IRS contact information from the notification. There are three possible contact phone numbers for the IRS, so taxpayers should be referred to use the specific contact information on the notice they received.
