About the VSCPA: History and Membership

History

The Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA) is the leading professional association dedicated to enhancing the success of all Certified Public Accountants (CPA) and their profession by communicating information and vision, promoting professionalism and advocating members' interests.

Founded in 1909, VSCPA membership consists of more than 8,000 individual CPAs who actively work in public accounting, private industry, government agencies or in educational institutions. The VSCPA office, called the Richmond CPA Center, is located in the Innsbrook Corporate Center in the West End of Richmond.

The VSCPA serves as a central source of information for its members, offering education programs and representing the interests of CPAs before both state and federal agencies and legislators. The VSCPA also works to enhance and promote the image of the CPA with the general public, media, legislators, educators and students.

The VSCPA has 10 chapters across the state that offer networking, professional education and other opportunities to get involved on the local level. Chapter membership is voluntary and allows a CPA to be active within his/her community. Each chapter has its own dues structure and, in this respect, is independent of the VSCPA.

At the national level, CPAs can belong to the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), headquartered in New York City with offices in New Jersey and Washington D.C. Each state also has its own society/organization independent of the AICPA. CPAs can choose to belong to the AICPA and/or the VSCPA, but it is not a mandatory requirement.
