H. Burton Bates Jr. Annual Scholarship

The H. Burton Bates Jr. Annual Scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior accounting major currently enrolled in an accredited Virginia college or university who has demonstrated academic excellence and financial need OR to a student who has earned his/her undergraduate degree and is taking additional coursework in order to take the Uniform CPA Examination. This $2,500 scholarship is administered by the VSCPA Educational Foundation and funded by a generous contribution from the children of H. Burton Bates Jr., CPA — a VSCPA life member who passed away in May 2005.

 

Eligibility

  • Applicant must be a United States citizen.
  • Applicant must
    • be a junior or senior accounting major currently enrolled full time at an accredited Virginia college of university.

OR

    • have earned an undergraduate degree from an accredited Virginia college or university AND
    • be enrolled at least part-time (as defined by the institution) during the term of application and throughout the term of scholarship in coursework required to quality to take the Uniform CPA Examination.
  • Applicant must be in good academic standing during the term of application and remain in good academic standing throughout the term of the scholarship.
  • Application must be typed or printed.

  • Essay (500-word maximum) that describes a situation in which you have utilized one or more of the following competencies:
    • Leadership: Describe a situation in which you demonstrated the ability to influence, inspire and motivate an individual or group of individuals to achieve desired results.
    • Ethical Conduct: Describe a situation in which you were confronted with an ethical dilemma and explain how you confronted the issue.
    • Decision Making: Describe a situation in which you demonstrated effective problem solving through your decision-making skills, personal insight, judgment and creativity.
